How To Make A Fluffy Sheep Ornament

How cute is this fluffy sheep ornament?

This ornament is relatively easy to make and great project to make with the kids.

The instructions call for a bulky-weight yarn to shape the sheep’s body. If you want to use a lighter weight, you’ll need enough additional yarn for the ball to measure 5 cm (2 inches) across.

Instead of choosing yarn that looks like mohair, try other textures such as boucle or chenille. You can replace the felt for the ears and face with 2.5 x 2.5 x 0.3 cm (1 x 1 x 1/8 inch) wooden hearts (for face) and 2.5 x 1 x 0.3 cm (1 x 1/2 x 1/8 inch) narrow hearts (for ears).

The finished size of this sheep ornament is about 6 x 6.5 x 5 cm (21/2 x 23/8 x 2 inches).

Materials List

Tracing paper and pencil
4 x 7.5 cm (11/2 x 3 inch) piece of stiffened black felt
Four 1 x 1 cm (1/2 x 1/2 inch) wooden spools
Black acrylic paint
Small flat paintbrush
12 yards of white bulky-weight acrylic yarn
Gold bell, 1 cm (1/2 inch) high
20 cm (8 inch) length of red 3 mm (1/8 inch) satin ribbon
25 cm (10 inch) length of thread for hanger
Two 5 mm (1/4 inch) wiggle eyes
Glue gun and glue stick
Scissors

Step 1

Trace patterns onto tracing paper with pencil. Cut out three narrow hearts for ears and tail and one traditional heart for face from stiffened black felt. Paint each wooden spool black. Add coats as needed for complete coverage. Let dry.

Step 2

Wind yarn into a 5 cm (2 inch) ball. Glue the end in place to secure. Let dry. Referring to photo for position, use glue gun to attach the flat end of each spool to bottom of yarn ball for legs.

Step 3

Turn one narrow heart upside down and glue it onto the back of the yarn ball for sheep’s tail. Turn the remaining heart upside down and glue the narrow hearts to the front of the traditional heart for ears. Glue wiggle eyes to larger heart face. Glue larger heart to front of yarn ball.

Step 4

String gold bell onto ribbon and tie a bow. Trim ends to desired length. Glue the bow to chest of sheep.

Step 5

Pull thread under a few strands of yarn at top of sheep and tie the ends in an overhand knot, to make a loop for hanging.
